A Literacy Project

The GFWC-GaFWC Service Guild of Covington developed THE LISTENING-TALKING LAP BOOK for the Literacy Volunteers of Newton County’s “Prepare for Success” program.

Planned and designed by LVA Newton County, this program presents early literacy activities for children from birth through three years, at participa-ting child-care centers. The goal is reading readiness.

LVA Newton County applied for and received a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta to fund their initiative of 11 one-hour workshops for child-care directors. In partnering to offer “Prepare for Success”, our club made a picture book for each child care center in Newton County.  Made from pictures from magazines, catalogs, calendars, greeting cards, inexpensive children’s books, a train encyclopedia, our book is a vital learning tool in the program.  We glued pictures on brightly colored letter-size computer stock paper, hand-lettered the subject and enclosed each in a page protector for placing in a loose-leaf binder.  A title page for the outside of the binder was made, centered with a color picture of a little girl sitting in a bed of daffodils reading to her Raggedy Ann doll.

Community interest has been great, with pictures coming from our Mayor, librarians, principals, friends, churches, tractor, car and truck dealerships, farmers and our local airport. With the help of all these people, our members have prepared 1140 pictures in 17 books. The recipients are 960 children.
